Season 1 Summary

Here is the nuts and bolts of the Pendleton Sasquatch Rugby Club history…Eric Gabriel transplants from Jackson Hole, Wyoming and decides he wants to start a men’s rugby club, but apparently too many of the men of Pendleton are afraid to get tackled, thus he meets a young skinny toad named Patrick Blaine from California (whom had just moved to Pendleton and was half-way through his Sophomore year) who played a little in Cali and wants to continue playing.  So figuring that the men in town were never going to come around and play a man’s game it was time to teach the youth this incredible game called rugby.

After making contacts with Pendleton High School, the Pendleton Parks n Rec, and Rugby Oregon rugby in Pendleton was well on its way.  There were a handful of boys that began coming out in the Spring of 2008 and stuck with it for the most part through the summer and into the fall.  In the winter of 2008/2009 it all came together and finally the Sasquatch were official in the eyes of Rugby Oregon and rugby found a new home in Pendleton, Oregon.

In the Sasquatch’s short history there have been some firsts: the first high school rugby club in Umatilla County, the only high school rugby club in Eastern Oregon (Bend doesn’t count as Eastern Oregon), first high school rugby match played in Pendleton (McMinville), 1st season Sasquatch had the highest scoring average per match 34 pts per game, Patrick Blaine was named to the U-17 All Oregon Team.

Some other major highlights:  finished 3rd in state for Div III (moving up to Div II in 2010), best parent support and without a doubt the best after match social at the high school level.

This is only the beginning….
